A shop on its final spin
The play begins with a record shop facing closure and a rising DJ unwilling to let its music and history disappear. What starts as a practical fight over the shop becomes a larger argument about who gets to preserve a neighborhood’s culture.
The story’s Bronx setting is not just background. The store’s records hold shared memory, and the characters’ competing plans for the space reflect different ideas about survival and legacy.
Cast and creative team
Kara Young plays Lonnie, the rising DJ, and Ruben Santiago-Hudson plays Red, the shop owner. Dominique Morisseau wrote the play, and Kamilah Forbes directs.
Live DJ sets are featured throughout. Roundabout Theatre Company describes the sound as pulsing with hip-hop and jazz, making music part of the action rather than a decorative soundtrack.
