Research and collaboration
Tectonic Theater Project develops plays through research and collaboration. For Here There Are Blueberries, the company worked from the Höcker Album, historical investigation, and the questions raised by the photographs. The production is written by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich and was conceived and directed by Kaufman.
This process links archival material to theatrical form. Researchers establish what can be supported by records, while theatre-makers decide how to shape those findings into scenes, images, and audience encounters.
What Moment Work means
Tectonic describes Moment Work as a way to build theatre from the elements of the stage—not words alone. Actors, objects, light, sound, projection, and spatial relationships can each create a dramatic ‘moment’; the creative team sequences and layers these moments into a larger narrative.
For a documentary play, that method can make research visible without turning the performance into a lecture. A photograph, a projection, or a shift in who speaks can help audiences notice how evidence is gathered and interpreted.
Why the form suits this subject
The play’s source material is an archive of images and captions, so theatrical choices about projection, testimony, and narration are part of the argument. The performance asks viewers to consider what an image shows, what it leaves out, and how people respond to evidence.
