Three generations under one roof
The Berger family lives in a cramped Bronx tenement during the Great Depression. Their different ideas about money, work, family duty, and what counts as a better future press against each other in the same household.
Odets’s play gives those disagreements a larger context: poverty and uncertainty shape the choices available to each generation, while the family’s arguments reveal their hopes and frustrations.
